"LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) individuals face a particular set of challenges, both in becoming homeless as well as when they are trying to avoid homelessness. LGBTQ persons face social stigma, discrimination, and often rejection by their families, which adds to the physical and mental strains/challenges that all persons experiencing homelessness struggle with.Frequently, homeless LGBTQ persons have great difficulty finding shelters that accept and respect them. LGBTQ individuals experiencing homelessness are often at a heightened risk of violence, abuse, and exploitation compared with their heterosexual peers. Transgender people are particularly at physical risk due to a lack of acceptance and are often turned away from shelters; in some cases signs have been posted barring their entrance."- National Coalition for the HomelessAccording to The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law Homeless Youth Provider Survey of 138 youth homelessness human service agency providers, 40% of the homeless youth served by agencies identify as LGBTQ43% of clients served by drop-in centers identified as LGBTQ30% of street outreach clients identified as LGBTQ30% of clients utilizing housing programs identified as LGBTQ#WeAreAurora❤️🧡💛💚💙💜#LGBTQPrideMonth#EveryoneHasValue#EndHomelessness #Equality ... 🗣 June Employee SpotlightBrandi Scott is our Housing First Case Manager and has stepped up big time in recent months. She helps clients that have a mental illness or substance abuse issue (or both) that are in a housing crisis get housed and provide rental assistance for 9-12 months. She does intensive case management so by the end of the program she has helped them build a foundation and plan to maintain housing on their own. Brandi has a Bachelor's in Social Work and is currently working on her Masters in Public Administration.
